Biosphere Park Wienerwald (Vienna Woods)
105,000 hectares of biosphere park
Because of its uniqueness and biodiversity, the Wienerwald and its settlements are under the special protection of UNESCO.
The Wienerwald: (landscape) cultural heritage
A biosphere park is a landscape placed under special protection by UNESCO. There are six biosphere parks in Austria, one of which is the Wienerwald.
105,000 hectares of biosphere parks cover 51 municipalities in Lower Austria and seven districts in Vienna. The Wienerwald is one of the largest self-contained deciduous forest areas in Central Europe and is one of the most species-rich forests in Austria.
For the people who live in the Wienerwald, it is a habitat, economic and recreational area at the same time. Since 2005, the Biosphere Park has created the conditions for a meaningful and sustainable coexistence of often seemingly different interests.
The three main functions of UNESCO biosphere parks are
- protection of ecosystems and landscapes, conservation of biological and cultural diversity and genetic resources
- development and promotion of ecologically, economically and socio-culturally sustainable forms of land use
- support of research, environmental monitoring and educational activities for a better understanding of the interaction between man and nature
In Austria, apart from the Wienerwald, the following areas are also under UNESCO protection: the Lower Lobau in Vienna, Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, the two Tyrolean alpine regions of Gurgler Hauptkamm and Lake Gössenköller, and the Great Walser Valley in Vorarlberg.
