Hiking in Baden bei Wien & Surroundings
From the Vienna Basin to the Traisen and Gölsen area: 1,300 square kilometres of unspoilt nature in the immediate vicinity of a city of over a million inhabitants are unique in the world. Hilly sandstone forest ridges in the west, rugged limestone cliffs in the east, deciduous and pine forests, interspersed with meadows and fields, characterise the landscape.
The Wienerwald (Vienna woods) was mentioned long ago by the Ancient Greeks as a forest mountain range, and the Romans discovered its natural powers for healing and recreation. Even today the thermal springs around Baden still refresh body and soul - perhaps as a relaxing conclusion and highlight of a hike.
But another destination may also be an incentive for hikers: The wine, which grows on romantically situated slopes, can be tasted in many Heurigen along the way.
