In 1805, at the Mariazellerhof, Kaiser Franz founded the Wohltätigkeitshaus charitable sanatorium for those poor people in need of spa therapy. There is a thermal water spring in the Mariazellerhof grounds. The sanatorium and spa were extended in 1825 and this social institution is preserved as part of the Hotel Badener Hof, renovated since 2005 yet maintaining the historic structures.
