Marienbad
Czech Republic
Marienbad (Mariánské Lázně) - founded in the neo-classical era of the early 19th century - is one of the most extensive spa resorts in Europe. The town's planners turned the surrounding, unpleasant swampy valley into an enchanting park with neo-classical and Empire houses, gloriettes, pavilions and colonnades.
The core of the spa town is a central park with the spa colonnade in the wider part of the wooded valley. The spa ensemble encircles this central park along the valley floor and extends to the surrounding hills. Neo-classical spa buildings characterize the architectural concept of the city. Spa architecture, houses and villas from the 19th and early 20th centuries are predominant. They represent a variety of architectural styles, ranging from Historicism to Art Nouveau.
Well preserved buildings for spa treatments and hotels, as well as various structures above the springs and colonnades characterise the cityscape. The international importance of the city is reflected in its churches of various denominations. The character of the spa ranks it among the most cosmopolitan spa towns in Europe.
